    In-8° : [39]-[1 bl.]-412-[1] pp. (a few small wormholes, heavy dampstains at last lvs with lack of paper and text, library stamp on title page).
    Contemporary binding : full calf, covers with blind tooled fillets and fleurons, title on ribbed spine with repeated fleuron (upper joint split, turn ins and leather lacking on the first rectangular design, dampstains at back cover, edges and corners dulled, important dampstain with loss at last flyleaf). - Est.: 250/300 €
    Third edition of this apologetics of the catholic religion (1st ed. : 1543) by Vives (Valence 1492-1540 Bruges), a Spanish Jew turned into catholic. Theologian and philosopher, he was considered as one of the most oustanding humanists of his time and was patronised by Guillaume de Croij and Carolus V. During his charge as professor of theology at the University of Leuven, he was in contact with Erasmus who asked him to prepare a critical edition of Saint Augustine's City of God.
