The Receptions of Medieval Spirituality of the Low Countries and the Rhineland in Early Modern Europe
Legacies, Circulations, and Networks
International conference, Louvain-la-Neuve (November 27-29, 2024)

The aim of this conference is to examine the receptions of late medieval spirituality of the Low Countries and the Rhineland in early modern Europe. In the context of the Reformation, the Charterhouse of Cologne played a significant role in translating and publishing mystical and ascetic texts. On the other hand, the influence of authors from the Devotio Moderna on early modern spiritualities is widely acknowledged. Several currents in the early modern period testify to these legacies and demonstrate their reciprocal interactions. This conference aims to address the historical processes of this transmission, since a broader perspective on this matter is still lacking. The objective is also to go beyond the dichotomy between the medieval and early modern periods, while emphasizing the specificities of the period under consideration. By considering receptions from the angle of legacies, circulations and networks, this conference aims to open up the field of possible approaches to this question, including notably intellectual history, the history of literature and the arts, and editorial, institutional, and social history.
